Chris Wright returned to the court for the Georgetown Hoyas on Friday night. But not even Wright could keep the Hoyas alive in the NCAA tournament.

No. 11 seed Virginia Commonwealth took apart Georgetown in a 74-56 victory in the second round of the Southwest region in Chicago.

Wright, who the Hoyas hoped would jolt Georgetown out of a miserable late-season funk, scored six points on 3 of 13 shooting in his return after missing four games with a broken left hand. Hollis Thompson led the Hoyas, seeded No. 6 in the Southwest, with 26 points.

The Hoyas end the season at 21-11, losing five in a row and six of their last seven following an eight-game winning streak. It’s the third consecutive time the Hoyas have been eliminated from the NCAAs by a double-digit seed.

VCU held Georgetown to 38.5 percent shooting from the field, and the Hoyas were an abysmal 5 of 26 (19.2 percent) from 3-point range. Ahead 19-18, the Hoyas were outscored 17-5 to close the first half, and the Rams never let up in the final 20 minutes.

If Chris Wright indeed is right from a health perspective, the Georgetown Hoyas have to feel good about their chances as the NCAA tournament begins.

But if the Hoyas’ point guard isn’t at full speed, a sputtering Georgetown squad looks vulnerable to a first-game exit from the Big Dance.

The Hoyas take on the winner of Southern California and Virginia Commonwealth in their first NCAA game on Friday in Chicago. And all eyes are on Wright, who missed the past four games with a broken hand. The school said last weekend Wright had been cleared to play in the NCAAs, but how quickly Wright can jump back into the fray may very well determine how long the Hoyas hang around.

Neither team the Hoyas could face will be an easy opponent to defeat. Southern Cal had won five out of six before falling to No. 15 Arizona 67-62 in the Pac-10 semifinals. VCU ended George Mason’s 16-game winning streak in the Colonial Athletic Association tournament before falling to Old Dominion in the title game.

Regardless of the opponent and regardless of whether Wright is on the floor, the Hoyas need to turn things around. Georgetown has lost four games in a row, falling 79-62 to eventual Big East Conference champion Connecticut in the conference tournament last Wednesday.

Chris Wright is still at least a few days away from rejoining the Georgetown Hoyas. His teammates will have plenty of time to watch the rest of the Big East tournament.

In their postseason debut Wednesday, the Hoyas fell to No. 19 Connecticut 79-62 at Madison Square Garden.

Georgetown, ranked No. 22 in the nation, has lost four games in a row. The Hoyas were 20-5 on the season and looking like a serious contender for the Big East title before losing to the Huskies 78-70 on Feb. 16. After a win over South Florida three days later, Georgetown closed the regular season with losses to Cincinnati, Syracuse and Cincinnati again.

Losing Wright to a broken left hand in that first matchup against Cincinnati has hurt. Georgetown hopes it will have Wright back on the court when it tips off play in the NCAA tournament next weekend. Despite the skid at the end of the season, the Hoyas figure to earn an at-large bid to the big dance.

Jason Clark led the Hoyas with 23 points, but the Hoyas couldn’t recover from a 12-point halftime deficit. Austin Freeman added 20 points. Georgetown, eighth in the nation in field-goal percentage at 48 percent, shot just 42.3 percent against the Huskies.

Despite losing three of their past four games and dropping to sixth place in the Big East Conference, it’s a safe bet the Georgetown Hoyas will hear their name called when NCAA Tournament bids are announced on March 13.

The Hoyas are ranked No. 17 in this week’s ESPN/USA Today national rankings, and playing in the rugged Big East has resulted in several signature victories and molded a team that’s a dangerous squad heading toward postseason play.

Georgetown sits 3 ½ games behind Pittsburgh in the conference standings, but figures to be one of several Big East squads that will dance on into the NCAA Tournament. The Hoyas are 21-8 on the season but are one of eight Big East teams in the top 19 in this week’s national rankings.

Georgetown owns victories over five ranked teams this season, and an eight-game winning streak through the heart of its conference schedule showed just how dangerous the Hoyas can be.

Georgetown lost 58-51 to No. 20 Syracuse on Saturday. The Hoyas end the regular season Saturday at Cincinnati. The Big East Tournament starts next week in New York City.

Wright is averaging over 13 points per game, which is the second highest on the team behind Austin Freeman.

Head coach John Thompson III said they don’t know which bone he broke in his hand or how much time he could miss.

An injury to Wright would force someone else to take over the offense and leave a major scoring void.

Georgetown Hoyas star Greg Monroe was selected with the seventh pick in the NBA Draft by the Detroit Pistons, after a season in which he was a first-team All-Big East performer. He brings immediate help to a Pistons team lacking productivity from their big men.

Monroe was widely viewed as the most skilled big man in the draft, possessing great skill in not only scoring but also passing and helping run an offense, no doubt skills he refined while running the Princeton offense under John Thompson III at Georgetown. He averaged 16.1 points and 9.7 rebounds during his sophomore and final season in Washington, D.C.Despite his accolades, it will be interesting to see how Monroe will be remembered for his time at Georgetown. His freshman season was marked with locker room dissent and a catastrophic collapse that left the Hoyas on the outside looking in the NCAA Tournament. And after a successful regular season and appearance in the Big East Tournament title game, the Hoyas were upset in the first round of the NCAA Tournament by the Ohio Bobcats despite being overwhelming favorites.

Monroe was never able to win big or truly make his mark on the university record books. Regardless, his future appears bright in Detroit.

Down seven points in the second half on the road to the Providence Friars, the Georgetown Hoyas looked headed to a second straight let-down-after-a-huge-win game.

But unlike against USF, where Dominique Jones led the Bulls to snap the Hoyas’ 11-game winning streak at the Verizon Center, no one on Providence could rally the Friars, while the Hoyas got back to running their offense and controlling the game with Greg Monroe, as they won 79-70 on Tuesday night.

“Road wins in this league are difficult to come by,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said. “This was a game where things were not going well for us in a lot of different ways. We were extremely frustrated for large parts of that game. That’s because of Providence, that’s because of what they were doing, that’s because of their offensive execution and their defensive tenacity.”

Luckily, Monroe stepped up when it counted. After guard Jason Clark, who broke out for a career-high 24 points against Villanova, picked up three quick fouls in the second half, Monroe took over the facilitator role for Georgetown and started picking apart Providence.

Monroe finished with a most unusual double-double for a big man: one with points and assists. Monroe finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, and 12 assists on the night.

Three days after rolling over at home against Dominique Jones and USF, the Georgetown Hoyas put the Villanova Wildcats on their backs early and never let up.

The Hoyas exploded offensively in a 103-90 win over the No.2 ranked Wildcats in front of a crowd of over 10,000, despite an “epic” snowstorm that dumped two feet of snow upon the nation’s capital.

Before the game, when Hoyas PG Chris Wright scored 10 points or less in a game, the Hoyas were 1-5 this year (15-0 when he scored in double-digits). He had become known as a bellwether for the Hoyas—his performance was largely indicative of whether or not they’d win or lose.

The Hoyas rocketed out to an early lead on the heels of sophomore guard Jason Clark’s career day. Clark knocked down all four of his three-point attempts in the first half (and six on the day) en route to 24 points, easily his best game in a Hoya uniform.

Clark’s explosion made up for Wright, who was saddled with his fourth foul with more than 15 minutes left and spent most of the second half on the bench. Wright fouled out with more than five minutes left, having only scored seven points, and the challenge was on for the Hoyas.

But Georgetown, who hadn’t let Villanova close their lead to single-digits, kept their foot on the throttle at the free throw line, knocking down 39 of 50 in the game to boost their lead.

Junior guard Austin Freeman led the Hoyas with 25 points (including two three-points), and Greg Monroe finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, and six assists.

Things turned around in a hurry, and Georgetown found themselves trailing heading into the locker room.

Things didn’t get much better in the second half, as the Hoyas continued to miss shots and Syracuse pulled away.
